Eating beans may stave off breast cancer

According to a recent report in the International Journal of Cancer, women who consumed beans or lentils at least twice a week were 24% less likely to develop breast cancer than women who consumed them less than once a month. The cancer-protective effect was associated with the rich flavanols in beans and lentils. However, the study found that other flavanol-rich foods did not seem to affect breast cancer risk. The data was taken from the Nurses Health Study II and was analyzed by Dr. Clement A. Adebamowo and colleagues from the Harvard School of Public Health. (Reuters Health Information, April 7, 2005)
