Potassium-Enriched Salt Benefits CVD Risk
Substituting potassium-enriched salt for regular salt may help lower cardiovascular disease incidence and mortality among older men, according to researchers from the Institute of Biomedical Sciences. In a 31-month study, 1,981 men were randomized to use either potassium-enriched salt or regular salt. The men receiving the potassium-enriched salt had a greater CVD survival rate than the control group; incidence of CVD-related deaths was 13.1 per 1,000 persons in the experimental group and 20.5 per 1,000 in the control group. Men receiving the potassium-enriched salt also lived close to a year longer and spent less on in-patient care than their counterparts. (Natural Products Insider, 06/16/06)
